The Canal

The picture of Ava jumping off the bulkhead at our family cabin has offered a sense of nostalgia.  Summers were always so fun.  If we weren't sliding down the slip n' slide in the backyard, we were camping, cheering on the Mariners at the Kingdome, swimming in Lake Chelan, riding bikes or picking cherries in North Tacoma, we were at Hood Canal.  It was always fun.  But I think what is most special about the cabin is that it's a legacy left by my great-grandparents that generations have enjoyed  -together.

Ava is part of an already 19 year old generation of the Brock's.  She's jumping off the same bulkhead that my mom and her sibs jumped off and the same one that Brad pushed limits and caused many a gasp, and that I jumped from running/screaming from a relentless bee.  It's just a 9 foot wall, but it's where we ate pop sickles, played Uno, practiced new balance beam tricks, and it was a right of passage when you were FINALLY trusted to sit on it with the tide out and no water below.  And it's where Grandpa would yell out, "You're too far out! Swim in!"

What a legacy.  I'm so grateful for what my great-grandfather built.  I'm not sure he knew at the time that five generations later, roughly 30 of us would still be enjoying a t.v.-less, tiny, piece of history. If we could share with him, I'm sure he'd be interested to know that we have a shower now.  And I have to say thank you to my grandparents who maintained it and opened it up for so many of us to cherish.  Also, my dear sweet Aunt Colleen always brought us along on her trips, and created memories that I think it's safe to say, none of us will ever forget.  Thank you.  And I'm sorry about leaving m&m's in your car and then sitting on them on the ride home.

One other memory that this picture brings to mind is when Evan was in pre-school and we were talking about Ken Griffey Jr. and Dave made a comment that caused Evan to believe he didn't know who we were talking about.  So in an effort to trigger Dave's memory, Evan replied, "Yeah dad, you know Ken Griffey Jr. He's black, like you!"

  1. SO Katelyn and ian You both have these memories of summer..You are now at your own making of the memories. It is funny how these things start.. My kids can't think of Christmas without a Swedish Christmas Eve Dinner..How did That start? I ask myself. On and off a few times when thry were little then it was tradtion. Ian can't think of a summer without the lake trip..I don't know how we got to a 25 year tradtion but we did!! Everything YOU love and pass on is the preent you give your children and their children. It won't be excatly the same for your kids as it was for you but trust me those things that we as grandparents will watch you and your children enjoy are the gifts that God gives to the truly"wealthy" people here on earth.

  2. So cute and the pics and memories are super sweet! That's exactly what the cabin on American Lake is for us... a legacy from our grandparents! I'm sorry for you being away from it... it makes me sad for the day we move away too... moving away from a piece of our legacy!
